While there is no conclusive evidence of songs helping language learning I think most teachers would agree they probably do.
Broca’s area of the brain is concerned with both language and music, and a symbiotic, and even syntactic, relationship has been suggested between language and songs. Indeed some research in 2012 suggests that language may even be a form of music.
I doubt if I am the first to use semiotics in song lyrics, and for this I have coined the term symbolsong.
Below is a link to freely downloadable pdf sheets of some classic and popular songs which have been given the symbolsong treatment. The songs themselves are not included for obvious copyright reasons, but are of course available at all the regular sources.
